Hollow book safe - Garden in Your Window

January 30, 2012 14:19

Use this vintage novel as a jewelry box for your precious necklaces, rings, brooches, and bracelets. It's also perfect for storing candy, receipts, coins, and even your iPhone. The cover is plain dull green, and I embellished it with painted purple, yellow, and green flowers.

The book was carved out by hand and the pages are glued shut with Mod Podge. I lined the interior with paper from other books to keep it simple and protected. I take care in selecting vintage books for their quality, durability, and genre. This book was acquired for free at my local library.

Previous buyers have used their hollow books to store valuables and treasures, given as gifts for friends who love to read, and enjoyed as Christmas gifts. This is fabulous decoration for a room or desk.

• Entire book: 5.5" x 8" x 1" (14 x 20.3 x 2.5 cm)
• Interior: 4" x 6.25" x 7/8" (10.2 x 15.9 x 2.2 cm)

I know this is super late…I’ve been really lazy about blogging (I find if you’re heart’s not into it, it’s very hard to blog, let alone think of
things to blog about). However, I’d like to share with you the items I won from a couple blog contests (and plug the Etsy shops of course!) [...]
As a member of BEST (the Bookbinding Etsy Street Team), I’m always inspired by handmade book sellers on Etsy…I love exploring their processes and materials used, and how
they combine all those skills. To the untrained eye, the books may all look the same, but there are subtle differences in how paper, binding, stitching, etc. [...]

About

Hi!! I am an artist and art teacher. I make handmade books and handcarved hollow books. I have a BFA in Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design, and will eventually be adding a teaching credential in art to my list of degrees. I also create acrylic paintings and love to write poetry. My paintings tend to have lots of colors; I work in both representational and abstract formats. The books that are eventually hollowed out are acquired for *free*; that means you'll receive a book that I personally chose. My ultimate goal is for you to be able to buy a product that you'll enjoy using. Honestly, the first time I cut into a book was very difficult for me, because I love to read and was raised to revere the written word. However, the form of the book is not changed, only the inside is taken out. The handbound books are neatly measured, cut, pasted, and sewn together by hand. I try to keep the designs simple.

I want to be able to share my creations with you! Enjoy! :)
